Open edges in Chennai homes
Chennai has a mix of building styles, and each has its own open edges.
Independent houses in older neighbourhoods often have open staircases leading to the terrace, with a railing on one side or none at all. The terrace parapet is sometimes only knee-high, and the terrace is used every day for drying clothes, water tanks and evening walks.
Apartment buildings built in the last two decades along OMR, GST Road and in the western suburbs usually have higher parapets, but many have open corridors, utility shafts and terraces used as common areas.
Newer villas and duplex flats often feature double-height living rooms and open staircases with glass or steel railings that leave wide gaps.
In all of these, a safety net is a quick way to close the opening without building a wall or welding a grill.
Why materials matter more in Chennai
Two parts of the climate decide how long a safety net lasts here.
Sun. Terraces and west-facing edges get hours of direct sun for most of the year. Plain plastic netting becomes brittle under that exposure, so we use UV-stabilised HDPE or nylon twine.
Salt and humidity. Even away from the beach, Chennai’s air is humid and slightly salty. Ordinary iron hooks rust, stain walls and loosen. We use stainless-steel eye bolts and hooks throughout, and a stainless-steel wire rope border on long spans.
How we install safety nets in Chennai
- Site check. We look at the edge, the wall or slab material and how the space is used.
- Choosing the net. Twine thickness and mesh size are chosen for what the net must stop. Smaller mesh is used where young children are around.
- Anchors. Stainless eye bolts are fixed at close spacing along the top, sides and base.
- Border. A heavy rope or wire rope is threaded and tensioned.
- Lacing. The net is laced to the border with extra ties at corners.
- Check. We press along the net to make sure nothing moves.
Most terraces and staircases are finished within a day.
After installation
Look at the net after the monsoon, and especially after any cyclone. Rinse off dust in the dry months. Keep heavy pots, chairs and barbecue grills away from the net, and never let anyone sit or climb on it.
