Balcony grills in Chennai homes
Chennai’s apartment boom has produced thousands of balconies with a view: the sea from the coastal belt, lakes and wetlands in the south, and the skyline from towers along OMR and in the western suburbs. Families want to enjoy those views, but with young children or pets they also want the balcony closed. A balcony invisible grill gives both.
We see three main reasons for choosing a grill over a net in Chennai:
- Lifespan in the climate. Stainless-steel cables last much longer in sun and salt air than nets.
- Neater look. Associations and owners in premium buildings prefer the cleaner look of cables.
- Lower upkeep. No sagging, no fading mesh; just an occasional wipe and tension check.
How a Chennai balcony grill is planned
- Full height or partial? We recommend full height from parapet to slab for homes with children.
- Vertical cables. Children cannot use them as a ladder.
- Spacing. Closer spacing for toddlers.
- Railing type. Glass, steel and concrete parapets each need a different way of fixing the bottom track.
- AC units and plants. We keep the outdoor unit accessible and plan around hanging pots.
- Pigeon net. If birds are a problem, we fit a transparent net behind the grill at the same time.
Specification
| Part | What we fit in Chennai |
|---|---|
| Cables | SS 316 marine-grade stainless steel, coated |
| Direction | Vertical |
| Spacing | About 2–3 inches |
| Tracks | Aluminium, fixed to slab and parapet with stainless anchors |
| Add-on | Optional transparent pigeon net |
Installation steps
We measure the balcony, mark the track lines and check they are level. Tracks are fixed to the ceiling slab edge and the parapet with stainless anchors. Cables are threaded at the agreed spacing and tensioned evenly. Side openings and corners get their own panels. If you have chosen a pigeon net, it is fitted last, behind the cables. Most balconies are finished in a day.
Grills for rented and resale flats
Many Chennai flats are rented, and tenants often worry about fittings they cannot take with them. Invisible grills can be removed when you leave, and the small holes in the slab and parapet are easy to fill. For owners planning to sell, a neat grill is often seen as a plus by buyers with young families.
Care
Wipe the cables with a damp cloth from time to time, more often if your balcony faces the sea. Press the cables gently every few months; if one is looser than the others, we can re-tension it. Keep stools and plant stands away from the grill.
