When Chennai homes need monkey protection
Chennai is mostly a city of pigeons rather than monkeys. Still, a few situations bring monkeys into homes:
- Houses near large green spaces, where monkeys move between trees and rooftops.
- Homes on the city’s outer edges, where development meets scrub land.
- Buildings next to tall trees, which give monkeys a route onto balconies and terraces.
- Homes where food has been left out, such as fruit on the balcony or open bins on the terrace.
If monkeys visit once and find nothing, they usually move on. If they find food, they return, often with others. A monkey net is the reliable fix once that pattern starts.
What a monkey net looks like in a Chennai home
Most monkey nets we fit in Chennai cover:
- Kitchen and utility balconies, where food smells attract monkeys.
- Terrace areas around water tanks and clothes lines.
- Open staircases leading to the terrace in independent houses.
The net closes the opening completely, from the floor or parapet to the ceiling slab, with no gap at the top for monkeys to climb through.
Materials for Chennai
We use heavy-duty, UV-stabilised HDPE or nylon twine, much thicker than a bird net. The border is stainless-steel wire rope or heavy rope, and the anchors are stainless-steel eye bolts set close together. Because Chennai’s humid, salty air rusts ordinary metal quickly, stainless steel matters even more here: a rusted anchor is the first thing a monkey will pull loose.
How we install
- Find the route the monkeys are using to get in.
- Plan a fully closed enclosure, including the top edge.
- Fix heavy anchors along the slab, walls and parapet.
- Tension the border tightly.
- Lace the net with extra ties at the top edge and corners.
- Add a lockable door if you need regular access.
- Pull-test the net at several points.
If monkeys are a building-wide problem
When several flats or houses on a street report monkeys, it is better to treat the problem together. A shared plan for terraces and open staircases is more effective than one house at a time, because monkeys simply move to the next open home.
Reducing visits
Keep fruit, grains and pet food indoors. Close kitchen windows when you go out. Never feed monkeys. Once they stop finding food, visits usually become less frequent.
