Why Chennai homes need extra care for children
A lot of Chennai’s new housing is in apartment towers, and children growing up in them spend a large part of the day close to balconies and windows. The balcony is where the family dries clothes, waters plants and sits in the evening breeze, so it is natural for children to follow. Independent houses have their own risks: open terraces used in the evening, and staircases with wide railings or no railing on one side.
A toddler can climb onto an AC unit or push a chair to the balcony edge in seconds. A children safety net is designed so that when that happens, there is nowhere to go.
What we cover in a Chennai home
- Balconies: from the parapet to the ceiling slab, and down over railing gaps to the floor.
- Windows: especially bedroom and living-room windows without grills.
- Staircases: open railings in duplex flats, villas and independent houses.
- Terraces: above low parapets where children play.
- Mezzanines: in homes with double-height halls.
Child-safe materials for Chennai
| Part | Our choice for homes with children |
|---|---|
| Net | Thick, UV-stabilised nylon or HDPE; knotless if you prefer a smooth surface |
| Mesh | Smaller than a standard safety net so feet find no foothold |
| Anchors | Stainless-steel eye bolts at close spacing, rust-proof in Chennai’s humid air |
| Ties | On the outer side, away from little fingers |
How we install
- We walk through your home with you and look at it from a child’s height.
- We measure each opening, including gaps below railings.
- Anchors are fixed close together along every edge.
- The border is tensioned so the net cannot be pushed outward.
- The net is laced with extra ties at corners and at the bottom edge.
- Railing gaps and side openings are closed with the same net.
- We press along the net at child height to check for slack, then show you what to check each month.
Habits that help
A net is a strong barrier, but no product replaces supervision. Keep chairs, stools and boxes away from balcony edges and windows. Do not store the AC remote or toys on the balcony ledge. Teach older children that the balcony is not a play area when adults are not there.
See our main children safety nets page for more detail, and our guide on how to childproof a balcony. Families who want a longer-lasting option often choose balcony invisible grills in Chennai.
