Chennai balconies and fall risk
Most Chennai apartment balconies have a parapet or railing at a standard height, which is safe for an adult standing normally. The risk comes from everyday things placed nearby: a plastic chair used to water plants, a stool kept for hanging clothes, a flowerpot ledge or the AC outdoor unit. Small children climb on these without a second thought, and pets jump onto ledges to watch birds.
On upper floors in Chennai’s high-rise towers, there is also the wind to think about. Sudden gusts during the monsoon and cyclone season can knock over light objects and make standing near the edge less steady.
Which Chennai balconies we cover most
- High-rise living-room balconies on OMR, in the southern suburbs and in the western suburbs, where families with young children want a safe place to sit out.
- Utility balconies in mid-rise blocks, where children follow parents who are hanging clothes.
- Bedroom balconies where a child’s bed or cot is close to the balcony door.
- Balconies with wide-gap railings in older buildings across central Chennai.
Materials for Chennai conditions
| Part | What we use in Chennai |
|---|---|
| Net | Thick UV-stabilised HDPE or nylon twine |
| Mesh | Around 40–50 mm, smaller for toddlers |
| Border | Heavy rope or stainless-steel wire rope on wide spans |
| Anchors | Stainless-steel eye bolts, chosen to resist salt air |
| Colour | Transparent or black, so the facade looks unchanged |
How we fit balcony safety nets in Chennai
We measure the full face of the balcony, including side openings and the gap below the railing. Stainless anchors are fixed along the ceiling slab, the side walls and the parapet or floor. The border is tensioned, the net is laced at short intervals, and railing gaps are covered with the same net. Finally we press along the net at child height to check there is no slack.
Looking after the net
Rinse it with water every few weeks in the dusty summer months. Check the corners after the northeast monsoon and after any cyclone warning. Keep furniture a short distance from the net so it is never used as a step.
