Why Pune balconies need protection
Balcony railings in Pune flats are built to a standard height that is safe for an adult. The risk comes from what gets placed nearby: plant stands, a chair, a step stool for the drying rods, the AC outdoor unit. Children treat any of these as a step. Objects can also fall from balconies onto people and cars below, which matters in societies where balconies face parking areas.
What we look at
- Railing type. Glass, steel bars and concrete parapets each need a different fixing.
- Gaps under the railing. Common in newer buildings; we cover them down to the floor.
- Side openings. Corner balconies have more than one open face.
- Height and wind. Upper floors in the western towers get more wind during monsoon storms.
- Society rules. Colour and position.
Materials
Thick UV-stabilised HDPE or nylon twine, a heavy rope or stainless wire-rope border and stainless-steel eye bolts. Transparent and black finishes are least visible.
How we install
- Measure the balcony face, side openings and the gap under the railing.
- Mark anchor points along the slab edge, walls and parapet.
- Fix stainless eye bolts at close spacing.
- Thread and tension the border.
- Lace the net, with extra ties at corners and where it meets the railing.
- Cover railing gaps down to the floor.
- Press along the net at child height.
Balconies across Pune
Towers in Hinjewadi, Wakad, Kharadi and Balewadi often have wide balconies with glass railings and long views. Transparent nets close the edge and keep the view.
Older societies in Kothrud, Karve Nagar and Aundh have smaller balconies, sometimes with railings lower than today’s standard. A net from railing to ceiling adds height without rebuilding anything.
Townships in Magarpatta, Hadapsar and Undri often have association guidelines on colour and placement.
Before the visit
Move plant stands, chairs and stools away from the parapet so the full edge can be measured. Share your society’s rules if it has any.
Care
Rinse the net in the dry months, check the corners after storms and keep furniture away from it so it is never used as a step.

Nets for rented flats
A large share of flats in Pune’s IT corridors are rented. Tenants with young children or pets often want balcony protection but worry about fittings they can’t take with them. A balcony safety net is a good answer: it is quick to fit, affordable, and comes down cleanly when you leave, with only small holes to fill. Most owners agree readily once they know the net protects their property as well as the tenant’s family. If you are a tenant, ask the owner before booking and share their agreement with your society if required.
Nets and AC units
Where the AC outdoor unit sits in the balcony, we keep the net clear of the fan and leave an opening for servicing.
