Pigeon Nets in Mysuru

Pigeons have long been part of Mysuru's old centre, gathering in large numbers around the palace and the markets. From there they spread into the residential streets, nesting on ventilators, window sunshades and quiet balconies. A pigeon net closes the gaps they use without blocking light, air or the look of your home.

Where Mysuru’s pigeons settle

Ventilators. Most Mysuru houses have small ventilators above bathroom and kitchen windows, with a sheltered ledge in front. This is the single most common nesting spot in the city’s layouts.

Window sunshades. Concrete chajjas above upper-floor windows give birds a dry, shaded place to roost.

Staircase landings. In houses with an open staircase to the roof, the landing and the space under the stair roof attract birds.

Balconies. Upper-floor balconies used mainly for drying clothes are quiet for most of the day.

AC brackets and ducts. In the newer apartment buildings on the city’s edges, pigeons go for the gap behind the AC unit and the shaft between flats.

Heritage roofs. Older bungalows near the centre often have gaps under tiled or decorative roofs.

Why a net rather than spikes

Spikes stop a bird sitting on one ledge, but it simply moves to the next. Sprays and gels wear off in the rain. A net physically closes the space so there is nowhere left to nest, which is why it is the long-term fix.

Materials

Part What we use
Net UV-stabilised HDPE or nylon, 50 mm mesh
Colour Transparent or black
Border Tensioned rope or coated wire
Hooks Stainless steel

Mysuru’s two monsoons mean long damp spells. Plain iron hooks rust and leave stains on painted walls, which is particularly unwelcome on a well-kept heritage home. Stainless steel avoids that.

How we fit it

We look at every place the birds are using, not just the obvious one. Each opening is measured, old nests are cleared from the fixing points, stainless hooks go in at close spacing and the net is tied to a tensioned border with extra ties at the corners.

Older centre versus newer layouts

Homes close to the palace and the markets in Lakshmipuram, Nazarbad and the older extensions see the most birds, and often need several openings netted. In the newer layouts of Vijayanagar, Kuvempunagar and Bogadi, the problem usually starts with one ventilator or balcony and can be stopped early.

Before we come

Count how many places birds are using and send a photo of each on WhatsApp so we bring the right amount of net.

After installation

Brush the net every few weeks and check it after heavy rain.

For mesh sizes and comparisons with spikes, see our main pigeon nets page. If birds are using the whole balcony, see balcony pigeon nets in Mysuru.

Feeding and pigeons

In the older parts of Mysuru, many people feed pigeons out of kindness, and the birds gather in large numbers where food is regular. That is fine for open squares, but it means the surrounding homes see constant traffic. A net doesn’t harm the birds; it simply moves their nesting away from your ventilators and balcony.

Pigeon Nets in Mysuru: FAQs

Why do pigeons nest on Mysuru houses?

Two- and three-floor houses have ventilators, sunshades and staircase landings that stay sheltered from rain and are rarely disturbed. Those ledges are ideal for nesting.

Can nets be fitted on a heritage home?

Yes. We use transparent or black nets that are barely visible and plan fixings carefully on older walls.

Which mesh size do you use?

50 mm for pigeons; about 25 mm if sparrows get in too.

Will the net last through the monsoons?

Yes. It is UV-stabilised and fixed with stainless hooks that don't rust.

Is the net visible from the street?

Transparent and black nets are very hard to notice.

What if there are eggs in the nest?

We suggest waiting until the young birds leave before closing the area.

How long does it take?

Small openings take minutes each; a balcony takes a few hours.

Does netting harm the birds?

No. The net only closes the opening; birds simply nest somewhere else.
