Why balconies need protection
Many Mysuru houses have upper balconies with low parapets or decorative railings with wide gaps. Plants, a chair and sometimes a water can are kept near the edge, all of which a child can climb. In newer apartments, railings meet standard heights, but plant stands and AC units still give a foothold.
Running from parapet to slab, the net seals the opening and also catches pots and toys before they reach the garden or road.
What we check
- parapet height and railing gaps
- side openings on corner balconies
- plant stands and furniture near the edge
- the slab edge, so there is no gap at the top
- the wall or stone surface, for anchors
Materials
UV-treated HDPE or nylon in a thick twine, bordered with heavy rope or stainless wire and held by stainless eye bolts. Transparent and black finishes are least visible.
Installation
- Measure the balcony face, side openings and gaps under the railing.
- Mark anchor points along the slab edge, walls and parapet.
- Fix stainless eye bolts at close spacing.
- Thread and tension the border.
- Lace the net with extra ties at corners and where it meets the railing.
- Cover railing gaps down to the floor.
- Press along the net at child height.
Houses, bungalows and flats
In layout houses, the balcony is usually reached from a bedroom and used for drying clothes. In older bungalows, balconies may have ornate railings worth preserving; the net goes behind them. In new apartments on the city’s edges, balconies are used daily and often have glass or steel railings.
Tenants and owners
Renting upstairs? A net costs little compared with a grill, keeps your children safe and can be removed cleanly when your lease ends. Owners letting a floor often fit one for tenants.
Before we come
Move plants and chairs away from the parapet so we can measure the full edge.
Care
Rinse the net in the dry months, check the corners after the monsoons and keep furniture back from it.

Decorative railings in older homes
Older Mysuru homes often have balconies with decorative cast-iron or welded railings, beautiful but with gaps wide enough for a small child. A transparent net laced behind the railing closes the gaps while the design stays visible. It is a simple way to keep a heritage balcony safe without altering it.
Net or grill?
A net costs less and is quick to fit; an invisible grill lasts longer and looks neater. Families staying long term often choose grills; tenants and those wanting a quick solution often choose nets.
