Two kinds of balcony
Sea-facing balconies. Common along Beach Road, Siripuram, Lawsons Bay Colony and Rushikonda. They take wind and spray, so birds visit less in rough weather but settle in calm spells. The net has to be extra secure here.
Inland and back balconies. Utility balconies and those facing the next building are calmer and drier, and they are where pigeons nest most.
Planning the net
- View: a transparent net on sea-facing balconies keeps the outlook.
- Washing and plants: stay inside the net line.
- AC units: the fan is kept clear and an access panel added for servicing.
- Access: a zip or hook-off panel for cleaning outer glass.
Materials
| Part | What we use |
|---|---|
| Net | UV-stabilised HDPE or nylon bird net |
| Mesh | 50 mm, or about 25 mm for sparrows |
| Colour | Transparent or black |
| Border | Coated stainless-steel wire on wide sea-facing spans |
| Hooks | Stainless steel |
Fitting for the wind
On sea-facing balconies we space hooks more closely than usual and use a coated stainless wire border on wide spans, so the net stays flat when the wind picks up. Corners get extra ties. On sheltered balconies, a tensioned rope border is enough.
After a storm
Visakhapatnam’s cyclone season is a reminder that every fitting should be checked after a severe storm. Look at the corners and edges; if anything has loosened, we can re-tension it.
Care
Rinse the net with fresh water every few weeks to wash off salt, and brush away dust and feathers.
Before we come
Tell us which way the balcony faces and send a photo. That helps us choose the border and hook spacing.
See our main balcony pigeon nets page, or pigeon nets in Visakhapatnam for AC ledges and ducts.
Balconies in different parts of the city
Along the coast in Siripuram, Lawsons Bay Colony and Rushikonda, balconies face the sea and the net has to keep the view as well as stand up to wind.
In the central areas of MVP Colony, Seethammadhara and Dwaraka Nagar, buildings stand close together and balconies often face the next block, which is where pigeons nest most.
In Madhurawada and PM Palem, newer towers have wide balconies on high floors, and birds find empty ones quickly after handover.
In Gajuwaka and Pendurthi, many balconies belong to independent houses and are used mainly for drying clothes.
Combining with a drying rack
If you also want a ceiling rack, fit both at once. The net goes on the outer edge and the rods are placed so they clear it when lowered.
