In newer apartments
Buildings towards Morampudi, Lalacheruvu, Diwancheruvu and the airport road have plumbing shafts running between flats, open at the top. Pigeons move in within months. Netting the top early, as a building, is far easier than clearing nests from every floor later.
In older town buildings
In Danavaipeta, Innespeta and Aryapuram, buildings often stand wall to wall with a narrow light well between them. Pigeons crowd in, and the smell drifts into bathrooms and kitchens on both sides.
Where the net goes
Across the top. One net at roof level closes the shaft for every home.
At your opening. If the building can’t agree, we close just your ventilator or the part of the shaft beside your flat.
The materials
UV-stabilised bird net with a 50 mm mesh, a tensioned border and stainless-steel hooks. Shafts stay damp around pipes, and the river air adds to that, so plain iron would rust fast. A panel near the pipes opens for the plumber.
On the day
We look at the shaft from your window and the roof, plan safe access, clear nests at the fixing points, fix the hooks, tension the border, lace the net, seal around pipes and fit the access panel.
Afterwards
Ask whoever opens the access panel to close it again. Shaft nets sit out of direct sun, so they usually last longer than balcony nets.
Before we come
Send photos of the shaft from inside and, if possible, from the roof.
Our duct area safety nets page has the full details, and the guide on why apartment duct areas need nets is a useful read too.
Common situations we see
Smell in the bathroom. Droppings collect on pipes and ledges in the shaft, and the smell comes through the ventilator. Netting stops new droppings; a cleaning team can then clear the old ones.
Birds flying into the kitchen. An open kitchen window onto the shaft lets birds straight in. A net at your opening stops them while keeping the window usable.
Noise at dawn. Shafts amplify cooing and flapping, which often wakes families in the early morning. Once the shaft is closed, the noise goes with the birds.
How do I get the building to agree?
Share photos from different floors in the residents’ group, explain that one net at the top covers everyone, and suggest splitting the cost. Associations usually agree once they see how many flats are affected. If not, netting your own opening still protects your home.
What about the cleaning afterwards?
We clear nests at the fixing points while we work. A full clean of the shaft, especially lower ledges, is usually a separate job, best done just after the net goes up so nothing new collects.
Older shafts
In older buildings, shaft walls are sometimes uneven or patched. We choose fixing points on sound concrete or brick and adjust the spacing so the net still sits flat and tight across the opening.
