In older town houses
Compact homes near the centre often have a small balcony or a narrow passage beside the kitchen. A compact ceiling rack or a slim pull-out wall rack makes the most of the space.
In family houses
Many families dry clothes on the roof, under a sheet for shade and shelter. Fixed rods or a wall rack there work through the year, and a ceiling rack on the upstairs balcony saves carrying washing up the stairs.
In newer flats
Utility balconies with concrete ceilings suit pulley racks, and many buildings discourage washing on outside railings.
The options
| Option | Where it fits |
|---|---|
| Ceiling pulley rack | Balcony or utility area with a concrete slab |
| Wall-mounted rack | Under a roof sheet, in a tall yard or below a false ceiling |
| Fixed rods | Under a sheet-covered part of the roof |

Sizing
A couple usually needs three or four rods; a family of four, five or six. Joint families often use a balcony rack for daily washing and roof rods for bedsheets.
On the day
We check the ceiling or wall, agree the type and size, fix the brackets level and clear of fans, lights and doors, assemble the rack and test it.
Afterwards
Wipe the rods now and then, check pulley ropes every few months and spread heavy items across rods.

Common situations we see
Washing soaked by a sudden shower. A line on the open roof gets caught by an afternoon storm in the monsoon. A rack under cover means clothes can stay out without being rushed in.
Too many stairs. Carrying a basket of wet clothes to the roof every day is hard work. A ceiling rack on the balcony saves the climb.
Clothes on the railing. Hanging washing over the balcony railing looks untidy and dries unevenly. A rack inside keeps it neat and lets air reach every item.
Which type should I choose?
If your balcony or utility area has a concrete ceiling within reach, a ceiling pulley rack holds the most and keeps the floor clear. If the ceiling is a sheet, a false ceiling or very high, choose a wall-mounted rack on a solid wall. Fixed rods under a roof sheet suit families who dry bedsheets and large items.
