Why Madurai balconies need protection
Balconies in independent houses are often built with a low parapet or a decorative railing with wide gaps. Families keep plants, a chair for the evenings and sometimes a cooler near the edge, all of which a child can climb. In newer flats, railings meet standard heights, but AC units and plant stands still give a foothold.
A safety net from the parapet to the slab closes the space completely and stops toys and pots from falling onto the street below.
What we check
- Parapet height and railing gaps, including decorative grills
- Side openings on corner balconies
- Coolers, AC units and plant stands near the edge
- The slab edge, so there is no gap at the top
Materials
Thick UV-stabilised HDPE or nylon twine, a heavy rope or stainless wire-rope border and stainless-steel eye bolts. Transparent and black finishes are the least visible on painted facades.
Step by step
- Measure the balcony face, side openings and gaps under the railing.
- Mark anchor points along the slab edge, walls and parapet.
- Fix stainless eye bolts at close spacing.
- Thread and tension the border.
- Lace the net with extra ties at corners and where it meets the railing.
- Cover railing gaps down to the floor.
- Press along the net at child height.
Houses and flats
In independent houses, the balcony is often reached from a bedroom and used mostly by the family, so it is easy to forget it is there until a child finds it. In flats in Anna Nagar, K.K. Nagar and along the ring road, balconies are used daily for drying clothes. Both benefit from a net that closes the edge without enclosing the space.
Before we come
Move plants, chairs and coolers away from the parapet so we can measure the full edge.
Care
Rinse the net in the dry months, check the corners after storms and keep furniture back from it.

Decorative railings
Many older Madurai houses have balconies with decorative cast or welded railings, often with wide gaps between the patterns. They look good but are easy for a small child to slip through or climb. A transparent net laced behind the railing closes the gaps without hiding the design.
Rented homes
If you rent an upper floor in a family house, which is common in Madurai, a balcony safety net is an affordable way to make it safe for your children. It comes down cleanly when you move, and most owners agree once they know it protects the property too.
