Why families choose balcony grills
A traditional steel balcony grill does its job but encloses the balcony, rusts and gets hot. A net is cheaper but has a limited life under Madurai’s sun. Balcony invisible grills combine strength, openness and long life.

- Full height for homes with children.
- Vertical cables, about 2–3 inches apart, closer for toddlers.
- Old grills are removed first if present.

Step by step
The balcony is measured and the track lines levelled. Next come the tracks, then the cables, tightened evenly. Side panels follow, and a pigeon net, if you want one, goes on at the end.
Houses and flats
In independent houses, balcony grills often replace old steel enclosures on the upper floor, opening the balcony up to the street again. In new flats, they are fitted from the start to keep the facade clean.
Heat and comfort
On a west-facing balcony in May, a steel grill can be too hot to touch and makes the balcony unusable until late evening. Thin cables don’t hold that heat, so the balcony cools down faster after sunset.

A rough width and height of the opening helps, along with a note of any grill already there.
Care
Wipe the cables when dusty and press them every few months. Keep stools and plant stands away from the grill.

Which balconies suit grills
Street-facing balconies in houses are the most common in Madurai. A grill keeps the view of the street and the breeze, and children can sit out safely.
Corner balconies in newer houses and flats wrap around two sides. Each side gets its own panel, joined at the corner with no gap.
Balconies with decorative railings can keep their railing; the grill goes above it, up to the slab.
Rented upper floors
Many families rent an upper floor in a house. With the owner’s agreement, a balcony grill can be fitted and later removed, leaving small holes to fill.
Approvals
Unlike large apartment complexes in the metros, most Madurai houses don’t need association approval. In apartment buildings, check whether the owners have agreed a common look first.
Care
Once a year, before the northeast monsoon, check that all the cables are evenly tight by pressing them gently. A loose cable can be re-tensioned in a few minutes.
