Open edges in Bengaluru homes
Owner-plus-tenant houses. A very common Bengaluru house type has the owner on one floor and one or two rented floors above, reached by an outside staircase. These staircases often have a railing on one side only and lead to terraces with low parapets.
Older independent houses. In Malleshwaram, Basavanagudi, Jayanagar and Rajajinagar, older homes have terraces used for drying clothes, sunbathing and evening walks, with water tanks and sumps nearby.
Villas and duplexes. In newer villa communities around Sarjapur Road, Whitefield and Yelahanka, open staircases and mezzanine edges overlooking double-height halls are common.
Apartment complexes. Podium gardens, terraces and open corridors sometimes have low edges that need protection.
Materials
| Part | Our choice |
|---|---|
| Net | Thick UV-stabilised HDPE or nylon twine |
| Mesh | Around 40–50 mm; smaller where young children are around |
| Border | Heavy rope or stainless-steel wire rope |
| Anchors | Stainless-steel eye bolts at close spacing |
Bengaluru’s long wet spells make stainless anchors important: plain iron rusts, stains walls and loosens.
How we install
- Survey the edge and the wall or slab material.
- Agree twine thickness, mesh size and colour.
- Fix anchors along the top, sides and base.
- Thread and tension the border.
- Lace the net, with extra ties at corners.
- Press along the net to check for slack.
Safety on outside staircases
External staircases to rental floors deserve special attention. They are used by tenants, visitors and children, often carrying shopping or water cans. A net laced along the open side of the stairs, from the steps to the handrail or above, prevents falls without making the stairs narrower.
Care
Rinse the net in dry months, look at it after heavy rain, and keep heavy pots and furniture off it. Nobody should sit, lean or climb on a safety net.
Before the visit
Walk round your house and list every open edge you are worried about. Photos of each, sent on WhatsApp, help us bring enough material to cover them in one visit.

Shared roofs and common areas
In owner-plus-tenant houses, the roof is often shared and used by several families, including children. A net along the parapet, together with a net along the outside staircase, protects everyone who uses them. In apartment complexes, associations can arrange nets for terraces, podium edges and open corridors as one job.
