Why Vijayawada balconies need protection
Many balconies here are small, with simple steel railings or low concrete parapets. Families keep plants, a chair for the evenings, a cooler or the AC outdoor unit close to the edge, and children use any of these as a step. In older blocks, railing heights may be lower than in newer buildings. A balcony safety net from the parapet to the ceiling slab closes the space completely, and it also stops toys and pots from falling onto the street.
What we look at
- Railing type and height, including any existing steel grill
- Gaps under or between railing bars, which we cover down to the floor
- Side openings on corner balconies
- AC units and coolers placed near the edge
- Wind exposure on upper floors of newer, taller complexes
Materials
Thick UV-stabilised HDPE or nylon twine, a heavy rope or stainless wire-rope border and stainless-steel eye bolts. UV stability matters in a city where balconies can sit in direct sun all afternoon. Transparent and black finishes are the least visible.
Installation
- Measure the balcony face, side openings and the gap under the railing.
- Mark anchor points along the slab edge, walls and parapet.
- Fix stainless eye bolts at close spacing.
- Thread and tension the border.
- Lace the net with extra ties at corners and where it meets the railing.
- Cover railing gaps down to the floor.
- Press along the net at child height to check for slack.
Balconies across Vijayawada
Older blocks in Labbipet, Governorpet and Suryaraopet often have low parapets and wide-gapped grills. Newer complexes in Benz Circle, Enikepadu, Kanuru and Poranki have higher balconies where wind is stronger during storms. Rented flats benefit from a net because it is affordable and removable.
Before the visit
Move plants, chairs and coolers away from the parapet so we can measure the full edge.
Care
Rinse the net in the dry months, check the corners after storms and keep furniture back from it.

Nets for rented flats
A large share of flats near Vijayawada’s colleges, hospitals and offices are rented. Tenants with young children often want balcony protection but can’t make permanent changes. A balcony safety net is the practical answer: affordable, quick to fit and easy to remove when you move, leaving only small holes to fill. Ask your owner first; most agree because the net protects their property too.
Nets and coolers
Air coolers placed against the balcony railing are common in summer. We keep the net clear of the cooler’s intake and suggest moving it back slightly so children can’t climb on it.
